About the position

The Principal Electrical Engineer (HVD Lines Design) at Consumers Energy is responsible for the engineering and design of high voltage distribution line assets, specifically for 46kV and 138kV systems. This role involves overseeing complex projects, collaborating with a team of engineers and technicians, and ensuring compliance with safety codes and engineering best practices. The position requires strong communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects while providing technical support to various stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products, serving as the primary point of contact with clients for all electrical engineering project matters.
  • Manage the development and implementation of electrical systems.
  • Design, maintain, implement, or improve electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for various purposes.
  • Prepare contract documents, including specifications, drawings, and addenda.
  • Perform a wide range of engineering tasks using computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment.
  • Collaborate with customers and coworkers to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects, monitor project progress and budget, and prepare reports for upper management.
  • Ensure installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps.
  • Establish construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing detailed calculations.
  • Ensure compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities.
  • Write reports and compile data regarding existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies, providing technical support to other departments as needed.
  • Prepare specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials and estimate material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation.
  • Oversee and manage the installation of electrical equipment and components.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with seven (7) or more years of applicable engineering experience, or a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with seven (7) or more years of applicable engineering experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in PLS-CADD is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate across multiple organizations and to people with varied technical experience.
  • Self-motivated with a positive and professional attitude.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, meet deadlines, and provide appropriate solutions to problems.
  • Knowledge of high voltage distribution lines materials and construction practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes related to electronic engineering.
  • Proficient in design and calculation software.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
