About the position

As part of the Site Operations organization, the Principal Automation Engineer is a key member of the Facility Systems & Plant Engineering (FSPE) team at Genentech. This role is crucial in providing technical support to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of automation systems at Genentech's South San Francisco and Dixon sites. The Principal Automation Engineer acts as a Technical System Owner and subject matter expert for various Building Automation platforms, engaging actively in the design, installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of critical automation and technology infrastructure across a portfolio of over 50 buildings, encompassing approximately 6 million square feet of space. In this position, the Principal Automation Engineer will provide strategic feedback in the development of automation infrastructure, lead communications with key customers and cross-functional partners, and directly support capital projects, business initiatives, process improvements, and regulatory inspections. The role requires a proactive approach to managing automation systems, ensuring they meet both operational and regulatory standards while also driving continuous improvement initiatives. The responsibilities of this role may include acting as the Technical System Owner (TSO), owning and maintaining a wide range of automation platforms, control systems, and system applications, including both GMP and non-GMP automation assets. The engineer will lead the design, development, and implementation of Building Automation Systems (BAS) using technologies such as Siemens Desigo, ALC, and Aveeva PI. Additionally, the role involves conducting system performance analysis, implementing corrective actions, and providing essential system support in a 24x7 environment. The Principal Automation Engineer will also be responsible for leading and maintaining server infrastructure, including system patching, upgrades, backups, and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Technical System Owner (TSO) for various automation platforms.
  • Own and maintain a wide range of automation platforms, control systems, and system applications (GMP & non-GMP automation assets).
  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of Building Automation Systems (BAS) using Siemens Desigo, ALC, and Aveeva PI technologies.
  • Conduct system performance analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide essential system support in a 24x7 environment for Site Operations customers.
  • Identify and resolve hardware and software application issues; manage change control processes.
  • Lead and maintain server infrastructure including system patching, upgrades, backups, operating procedures, and system manuals.
  • Influence cross-functional teams as a technical leader.
  • Establish work priorities and timelines under limited supervision.
  • Develop and lead vendor-partner relationships and support contracts.
  • Serve as a mentor to develop peers and junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Over 12 years of experience designing and supporting BAS specific automation systems in manufacturing or critical operations environments.
  • Recent experience in a pharmaceutical or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong hands-on technical experience with BAS: Siemens Desigo CC, BBMD configuration, and ALC WebCTRL.
  • Experience with industrial networks and communication protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, Windows Networking, OPC, BACnet, MODBUS).
  • Technical expertise in the integration and optimization of BAS components.
  • Experience with OSI PI Data Archive and Collectives, Asset Framework, OSI PI Connectors, and SQL Database.
  • Understanding of cGMP regulations and Good Engineering Practices (GEP).
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, along with system-specific certifications.

  • Experience with Windows based Programming (C/C# and .NET Framework).
  • IIS Web Application Configuration.
  • Data Management experience with Yokogawa data acquisition systems.
  • Windows server management, active directory & group policies.
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies such as LEAN/Six Sigma.
