About the position

The Principal Backend Engineer for Yahoo Mail will lead projects that enhance the user experience for hundreds of millions of users. This role involves overseeing the design, development, and maintenance of backend systems, particularly focusing on cloud-native applications and leveraging machine learning and big data technologies. The position is pivotal in setting the technical direction for the team and ensuring high-quality delivery of software solutions.

Responsibilities

• Tech Lead for projects involving many people (design, develop, ship and maintain)
• Scope work and break it down into deliverables, milestones; Estimate and manage project timelines, risk
• Set technical direction for the team; Identify and reduce technical debt proactively
• Understand tradeoffs between technical, product, user, security, legal and develop solutions based on them
• Provide technical advice on projects involving multiple teams
• Responsible for quality of the team delivery and ensuring knowledge is shared

Requirements

• 8+ years Software development experience with 2+ years experience as Lead Engineer
• Working experience with cloud native application development in GCP using Data Flow, Apache Beam, PubSub, Spanner etc
• Proficiency in Java and related technologies/frameworks, (e.g., Spring Boot, Hibernate, Maven/Gradle)
• Expertise in distributed software systems such as stream/batch processing, highly scalable serving systems
• Proven experience building software systems which are highly scalable and performant
• Experience cross collaborating with other functions such as Production Engineering, DevOps, Front End, Product management, UX Design

Nice-to-haves

• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or a related field
• Ability to work well with diverse groups of people, geographically dispersed across the world
• Passionate about and practical knowledge of working with Big data, AI/ML
