About the position

The Principal Boiler Technologies role at CPS Energy involves providing strategic and technical leadership for the management of boiler and heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) technologies. This position is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of these systems while collaborating with various teams to implement best practices and improve performance. The role requires oversight of operations, maintenance, and project management activities related to boiler technologies, as well as developing training programs and engaging in strategic business planning.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day strategic and technical oversight of CPS Energy's boiler and HRSG technologies.
  • Develop strategies to sustain and improve boiler and HRSG performance and reliability.
  • Analyze and evaluate operations, maintenance, and performance levels in plant environments.
  • Recommend boiler/HRSG conversions, upgrades, modifications, and/or new products as appropriate.
  • Prepare project estimates and develop accurate budgets.
  • Develop equipment specifications and contractual agreements, and perform project management activities such as outage planning and execution.
  • Assist with inspections of assigned equipment during outages or overhauls to evaluate overall condition and document remaining life assessment.
  • Continuously monitor technical bulletins and similar published materials applicable to the responsible assets.
  • Generate work notifications and preventative maintenance plans in the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Engage in key strategic business planning activities to ensure alignment with financial, operational, and safety performance metrics.
  • Maintain current records on all boiler parts and track repair and status of each part.
  • Direct department activities to support maintenance in troubleshooting causes of repetitive failures and unusual events.
  • Lead and support cause analyses to identify and correct/mitigate repetitive failures.
  • Indirectly supervise operations and maintenance teams overseeing projects and managing performance activities.
  • Develop training related to boilers and HRSGs for operations and maintenance teams.
  • Oversee tests that analyze design, feasibility, operation, equipment condition, and performance of the facility.
  • Confer with engineers, plant personnel, and management to develop mitigation plans and operational changes.

Requirements

  • Experience maintaining and/or operating power plants.
  • Management and executive or technical leadership experience.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License with a safe driving record or ability to obtain one within 3 months of hire.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills - written, verbal, and presentations.
  • Ability to use plant historian and other operating/monitoring/control systems.
  • Proactive, collaborative leadership style with ability to identify risks and problem-solve solutions.
  • Ability to achieve operational and maintenance objectives by developing strategic plans and reviews.
  • Ability to reconcile ambiguous situations and drive initiatives to successful conclusion.
  • Experienced workforce leader skilled in teambuilding and performance management.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully overseeing power plant operations, maintenance, or overhaul.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and manage multiple concurrent activities in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail, and scheduling.
  • Ability to read, understand, and use drawings, specifications, and regulatory statutes.

Nice-to-haves

  • PE registration / State of Texas Power plant or similar experience.
  • Specific experience operating and/or maintaining Alstom, Vogt-NEM boilers & HRSGs.
