About the position

The Principal Bridge Engineer will play a crucial role in evolving bridge evaluation practices in Indiana and nationwide. This position involves overseeing bridge projects, preparing complex design plans, and establishing procedures for bridge inspections and maintenance. The engineer will work closely with a team of experts to create and update regulations for bridges in the state, utilizing data-driven approaches to enhance infrastructure quality and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Establish procedures for overseeing the construction of bridge projects.
  • Initiate procedures for reviewing and interpreting plans, specifications, and construction methods.
  • Prepare unique, unusual, or highly complex design plans or review similar plans for bridges and related projects.
  • Establish procedures for reviewing and inspecting bridges to provide normal maintenance, cost-effective repair work, or major rehabilitation.
  • Develop and establish practices and procedures for directing job control and reviewing revised or newly adopted specifications and policies.
  • Provide recommendations and advanced level engineering expertise to resolve complex problems and provide effective and timely service.
  • Conduct advanced level and technical engineering work in engineering services, research, and special studies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (civil engineering preferred) from an ABET accredited school.
  • Registered Professional Engineer license in Indiana required.
  • At least six (6) years of experience in engineering, transportation research, or related area.
  • Willingness to travel with appropriate accommodation.
  • Broad knowledge of civil engineering theories, principles, methods, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of planning, design, or construction of highway or transportation project features.
  • Ability to apply federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and procedures governing the field of specialization.
  • Ability to apply computer-aided design and drafting functions to the field of specialization.
  • Ability to prepare and review complex design plans and reports.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with bridge design software such as CONSPAN, RC-Pier, GEOMATH, and Merlin Dash.
  • Completion of National Highway Institute courses related to bridge inspection and safety.
