About the position

Data is at the center of everything we do at Capital One. As a Principal Data Scientist in the Model Risk Office, you will play a crucial role in defending the company against model failures and enhancing decision-making through advanced statistical modeling and machine learning techniques. This position is not just about analyzing data; it's about leveraging your expertise to drive impactful outcomes in Risk Management and the Enterprise. You will collaborate with a cross-functional team of data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to deliver products that resonate with our customers. Your work will involve utilizing a broad stack of technologies, including Python, Conda, AWS, H2O, and Spark, to extract insights from vast amounts of numeric and textual data. You will be responsible for building machine learning models through all phases of development, from design to implementation, ensuring that your models are robust and effective. In this role, you will also need to flex your interpersonal skills to translate complex technical concepts into tangible business goals. The ideal candidate is someone who prioritizes customer needs, is innovative in their approach, and possesses a strong technical background. You should be comfortable with open-source programming languages and have hands-on experience in developing data science solutions using cloud computing platforms. A solid understanding of statistical methods, including model validation and backtesting, is essential. You will be expected to stay current with emerging technologies and seek opportunities to apply state-of-the-art methods in your work. Responsibilities

  • Partner with a cross-functional team of data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to deliver a product customers love
  • Leverage a broad stack of technologies - Python, Conda, AWS, H2O, Spark, and more - to reveal insights hidden within huge volumes of numeric and textual data
  • Build machine learning models through all phases of development, from design through training, evaluation, validation, and implementation
  • Translate the complexity of your work into tangible business goals for stakeholders

Requirements

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's Degree plus 5 years of experience in data analytics, or currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Master's Degree plus 3 years in data analytics, or currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a PhD, with an expectation that required degree will be obtained on or before the scheduled start date
  • At least 1 year of experience in open source programming languages for large scale data analysis
  • At least 1 year of experience with machine learning
  • At least 1 year of experience with relational databases

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in a STEM field plus 3 years of experience in data analytics, or PhD in a STEM field
  • At least 1 year of experience working with AWS
  • At least 3 years' experience in Python, Scala, or R
  • At least 3 years' experience with machine learning
  • At least 3 years' experience with SQL
