About the position

As a Principal Data Scientist at Safeway, you will lead data science initiatives, focusing on developing and implementing machine learning and AI models to drive business growth and enhance customer services. This role combines technical expertise with strategic leadership, requiring collaboration with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to deliver impactful analytics solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of data scientists and analysts.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive data science strategy aligned with business objectives.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to identify and prioritize high-impact projects.
  • Design, build and deploy large scale systems for demand forecasting and supply chain optimization.
  • Design and implement state-of-the-art machine learning models and algorithms.
  • Analyze large, complex datasets to extract actionable insights.
  • Oversee the end-to-end lifecycle of data science projects from ideation to deployment.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to integrate data science solutions into business processes.
  • Present findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in data science and machine learning.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in a STEM field like CS, DS, Engineering, Statistics, Math, etc. is preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in data science or a related field.
  • Proven track record of leading data science teams and projects.
  • Extensive experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) and data analysis tools (e.g., Python, R).
  • Strong background in statistical modeling, data mining, and predictive analytics.
  • Background in ads, retail industry required.
  • Proficiency in SQL and experience with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark).
  • Proficiency in writing production quality code and deploying solutions at scale.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and analytically.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with big data technologies such as Spark and Hadoop.
  • Knowledge of recommendation systems and advertising.
