About the position

The Principal Data Scientist at AbbVie plays a crucial role in the Oncology Early Development (OED) team, focusing on managing clinical data and analytics to derive strategic insights. This position is essential for enhancing the analytical capabilities of the department by leveraging advanced technologies, including AI and machine learning, to support clinical operations. The role involves collaboration with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for modern analytical techniques, leading the design and implementation of advanced analytics solutions, and mentoring junior team members.

Responsibilities

  • Build analytical capabilities within the Oncology Early Development department.
  • Collaborate with leaders and stakeholders to support analytical understanding of clinical operations.
  • Identify new opportunities for modern analytical and modeling techniques.
  • Lead the design, analysis, and interpretation of projects from data requirement gathering to recommendations.
  • Develop production-ready advanced analytics solutions to drive business and scientific decisions.
  • Define, design, implement, and validate algorithms to analyze disparate data sources.
  • Design experiments to answer key analytical questions in oncology clinical development.
  • Own the full lifecycle of model development from ideation to deployment and monitoring.
  • Ensure adherence to federal regulations and Good Clinical Practices (GCPs).
  • Stay updated on evolving regulations and guidelines related to clinical development.
  • Innovate with new approaches and share technical solutions with the team.
  • Coach and mentor junior team members and may supervise staff indirectly.
  • Collaborate across R&D functional areas for broad impact on complex projects.
  • Translate complex data science findings for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Develop and maintain Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) across the OED portfolio.
  • Create tools and data reports to inform strategy for oncology asset development.
  • Summarize data outputs into presentations for governance and decision-making.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in statistics, analytics, bioinformatics, data science, or equivalent field.
  • Master's degree or Doctorate preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in building, evaluating, and deploying machine learning models.
  • Expert proficiency in R, Python, or other statistical packages.
  • Expert-level knowledge of statistical and data mining techniques.
  • Experience with visualization tools like Spotfire or Tableau.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Ability to convert analytical reports into concise presentations.
  • Experience with machine learning and advanced analytics techniques preferred.
  • Experience in cloud computing environments (e.g., AWS, Azure) preferred.
  • Effective communication skills, able to convey technical concepts in layman's terms.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • History of successful execution in a fast-paced environment.
