About the position

The Principal Data Warehouse Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting the University of Colorado's growing needs for data-driven decision-making through the use of an enterprise data warehouse, data integrations, analytics, and business intelligence initiatives. This position is integral to the university's ETL team and will serve as a domain expert in data warehousing, applying industry-standard processes. The role requires extensive collaboration with various departments, including Procurement Services, Campus Solutions, Finance, Human Resources, Advancement, and Grants and Research, as well as UIS departments such as database administrators, system admins, middleware, infrastructure, production services, enterprise data architects, developers, and quality assurance testers. The Principal Data Warehouse Engineer will be responsible for conducting data engineering tasks, which include requirement gathering, ETL development, system testing, deployments, documentation, and production support. The role involves working with data sources such as CU's PeopleSoft Student, HCM, Finance, InfoEd, and Advancement systems. The engineer will also engage in data and BI business/data analyst efforts, collaborating with key partners to gather requirements and assist with User Acceptance Testing. Additionally, the engineer will design supportable solutions to meet customer needs and support CU's long-term business goals through the development of new data warehouse data marts and enhancements to existing data marts and reports. This position will require the creation and maintenance of source to target mappings across multiple domains at the University, as well as the use of development tools including IBM DataStage, SAS, and Perl. The engineer will act as a domain expert in ETL Development and Solutions Architecture, providing support and guidance to ETL developers throughout all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). The role also includes planning and conducting system integration test cases to ensure successful solutions, deploying code and objects through various SDLC environments, and investigating data, process, logic, or scheduling issues to identify root causes and resolution plans. As a technical lead, the Principal Data Warehouse Engineer will participate in technology projects and initiatives, working closely with project managers to identify technical solutions and track project plans. The engineer will also lead and mentor team members on data and BI concepts and best practices, provide recommendations on data strategies and application infrastructure, and assist in designing a multi-year data warehouse roadmap. Continuous education and professional development are encouraged, including attending trainings and conferences and engaging in self-directed learning.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct data engineering, including requirement gathering, ETL development, system testing, deployments, documentation, and production support with data sources such as CU's PeopleSoft Student, HCM, Finance, InfoEd, and Advancement systems.
  • Conduct data and BI business/data analyst efforts to collaborate with key partners gathering requirements and assist with User Acceptance Testing.
  • Design supportable solutions to satisfy customer needs and support CU's long-term business goals via new data warehouse data marts and enhancements to existing data marts and reports.
  • Conduct data profiling and analysis.
  • Create conceptual, logical, and physical data models for simple to medium complexity work efforts.
  • Create and maintain source to target mappings across multiple domains at the University.
  • Use development tools including IBM DataStage, SAS, and Perl.
  • Act as a domain expert in ETL Development and Solutions Architecture.
  • Partner with management to allocate responsibilities among ETL developers.
  • Provide support and guidance to ETL developers, as required for all Software Development Life Cycles (SDLC) phases.
  • Plan and/or conduct system integration test cases (SIT) to ensure solutions are successful throughout the entire system.
  • Deploy code and objects through SDLC environments including development, QA, and Production along with partnering with production services to ensure the correct job scheduling is in place.
  • Investigate data, process, logic, or scheduling issues to identify the root cause, mitigation, and resolution plans.
  • Participate in technology projects and initiatives as a technical lead working with the project manager to identify the technical solutions and track project plans, estimates, cut over plans, resources, and communications.
  • Lead, advise, and mentor team members on data and BI concepts and standard methodologies.
  • Provide recommendations on data strategies, platforms, and application infrastructure required to implement solutions.
  • Assist with design and leading a multi-year data warehouse roadmap, balancing short- and long-term goals and investments to scale and deliver our solutions globally and fulfill the organization's high-level reporting & analytics needs.
  • Participate in and lead peer design and code reviews.
  • ETL DataStage administration including tool and Linux structure configuration, setup, and monitoring of the health of the environment.
  • Partner with BI team to communicate data warehouse enhancements and suggest modifications to Cognos Framework Manager.
  • Continue education and professional development including attending trainings and conferences and self-directed learning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education, or equivalent professional experience (professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis).
  • Four (4) years of experience to include any of the following: IBM DataStage or equivalent, data modeling or database design or Data Warehouse/Mart design or data architecture, Kimball methodologies including star schema design, and accumulating and periodic snapshots, SQL, including familiarity with Oracle analytic functions and techniques for tuning large-volume queries, administration of an ETL or middleware tool (DataStage, ODI, Informatica, OSB, etc.).

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's or post-baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, information technology, or related field of study.
  • Six (6) years' equivalent experience to include any of the following: IBM DataStage or equivalent, Kimball methodologies including star schema design, and accumulating and periodic snapshots, SQL, including familiarity with Oracle analytic functions and techniques for tuning large-volume queries.
  • Experience in one or more of the following: Commitment SDLC standard processes as they relate to data warehousing, experience working in a Linux environment and with shell scripting (Perl/Korn), technical lead experience managing a development team responsible for the design, development and implementation of highly sophisticated programs, scripts, data objects resulting in high quality and performance, working in a University or Higher Education setting, Java and PL/SQL programming, PeopleSoft data models including Campus Solutions, Finance, and/or HCM version 9.0 or higher, one or more projects to implement an ETL or information management tool.
