About the position

The Principal Electrical Engineer at Collins Aerospace will lead the design and development of complex digital hardware for high-performance communication products critical to national defense. This role involves collaboration with a multi-discipline engineering team to create secure communication equipment that ensures service members remain connected in challenging environments. The position is based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and requires a strong technical background in circuit card design and hardware development.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a multi-discipline team of Engineers to develop hardware designs that meet system performance and operational specifications.
  • Lead and perform circuit card design lifecycle activities including requirements capture, schematic capture, design documentation, and signal integrity analysis.
  • Generate Printed Wiring Board (PWB) layout constraint guidelines and oversee the routing, layout, fabrication, and assembly of complex designs.
  • Prepare and present project and technical information to technical staff, program leadership, management, and customers.
  • Test and troubleshoot electronic circuitry, including support for design verification testing for circuit card assemblies.
  • Perform trade studies and select components necessary to implement requirements, supporting system architecture discussions as needed.
  • Mentor others in personal technical growth and may lead small teams to success with schedule, budget, and technical execution.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience, or in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
  • Experience acting as a hardware technical lead on circuit card developments, including hardware designs with processors, FPGAs, memory, and industry standard interfaces.
  • Experience with all aspects of circuit card design from concept through delivery to higher level assemblies as evidenced by successful design completion.
  • Experience with schematic capture of electrical circuit designs and generating Printed Wiring Board (PWB) layout constraint guidelines.
  • Hands-on experience testing circuit card assemblies and performing design verification activities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to prepare bids and proposals.
  • Project management experience using Earned Value Management System (EVMS).
  • Experience with Agile for Hardware Development, including planning, tracking, and managing hardware development projects in JIRA.
  • Familiarity with latest technology trends in high-speed digital design, microprocessor, memory, FPGA, and interface protocols.
  • Experience with signal integrity and timing analyses for robust circuit card designs.
