About the position

The Principal Electrical Engineer for Consumers Energy is a key role responsible for the design and engineering of high voltage distribution lines, specifically for 46kV and 138kV electric assets. This position requires collaboration with a team of engineers and technicians, overseeing complex projects that ensure the sustainable operation of the distribution, generation, and storage systems. The role involves communication with external stakeholders and adherence to the latest safety codes and engineering practices.

Responsibilities

  • Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products, serving as the primary point of contact with clients for all electrical engineering project matters.
  • Manage the development and implementation of electrical systems.
  • Design, maintain, implement, or improve electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for various purposes.
  • Prepare contract documents, including specifications, drawings, and addenda.
  • Perform a wide range of engineering tasks using computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment.
  • Collaborate with customers and coworkers to discuss engineering products or projects, monitor project progress and budget, and prepare reports for upper management.
  • Ensure installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing specifications and technical drawings.
  • Establish construction, manufacturing, or installation standards by performing detailed calculations.
  • Ensure compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities.
  • Write reports and compile data regarding electrical engineering projects and provide technical support to other departments as needed.
  • Prepare specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials and estimate costs for budget preparation.
  • Oversee and manage the installation of electrical equipment and components.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with seven (7) or more years of applicable engineering experience.
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with seven (7) or more years of applicable engineering experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in PLS-CADD is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate across multiple organizations and to people with varied technical experience.
  • Self-motivated with a positive and professional attitude.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, meet deadlines, and provide appropriate solutions to problems in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of high voltage distribution lines materials and construction practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes related to electrical engineering.
  • Proficient in design and calculation software.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.

  • Knowledge of distribution planning principles is an asset.
