About the position

The Distribution Principal Engineer at National Grid will serve as the customer-facing lead engineer responsible for reviewing and accepting non-utility, customer-owned electrical service interconnections. This role involves collaborating with external customers and internal departments to design safe and reliable electrical service solutions, while also maintaining the company's Electric System Bulletins. The engineer will represent the company in legal matters and industry working groups, ensuring adherence to corporate and national standards.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with external customers, consultants, and contractors to design electric service interconnection solutions.
  • Coordinate with internal departments to accomplish electrical service interconnections for customers.
  • Provide technical assistance and professional engineering advice to non-technical departments and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare correspondence, specifications, and sketches detailing customer installations.
  • Ensure adherence to corporate and national standards in customer installations affecting the electrical system.
  • Establish company-wide standards and policies for externally facing electrical specifications documentation.
  • Represent the company in legal matters as applicable to the position.
  • Participate in industry and regulatory working groups to achieve business goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering school.
  • Professional Engineer's license or ability to attain one in New York.
  • Minimum of 14 years of related experience.
  • Expert knowledge of industry practices, standards, and legislation.
  • Expert knowledge of the company's internal design and construction standards.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to understand and explain electric power system fundamentals to external customers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of current trends within the industry and developments in legislation or regulation.
  • Knowledge of National Grid's business operations, company policies, and practices.

  • Salary range of $144,000 - $203,000
