About the position

Daikin Applied is seeking a Principal Engineer - Innovation and HVAC System Performance Expert who will own the New Technology Introduction Portfolio. This individual will serve as a technical leader, managing an Innovation Portfolio while also leading a select number of technical projects focused on product features development and capability enhancement. The primary goal of this role is to contribute to the development of products and features that enhance knowledge in Models, Components Characterization, and Architecture Boundaries, particularly in the context of HVAC and cooling applications. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering on the Innovation Portfolio by managing new development product features and capabilities. These features will focus on optimal design solutions, system performance, and improving Internal Air Quality (IAQ). You will direct team activities to design new products, modify existing designs, and improve production techniques while developing models and test procedures. A key aspect of your work will involve resolving problems through innovative solutions that leverage new techniques, technologies, or concepts, particularly through Virtual Product Development using simulation to verify and validate requirements. Additionally, you will develop strategies to simplify or expedite technology development processes, including simulation, planned experimentation, and agile project leadership. You will also play a crucial role in fostering relationships with world-class universities to enhance R&D collaboration and will be responsible for coaching and mentoring team members to build a strong talent pipeline within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Own and manage the Innovation Portfolio of New Development product features and capabilities.
  • Direct team activities to design new products, modify existing designs, and improve production techniques.
  • Develop models and test procedures for new and existing products.
  • Resolve problems using innovative solutions involving new techniques, technologies, or concepts.
  • Drive reduction of uncertainty in models by correlating physical testing with mathematical-physical models.
  • Develop strategies to simplify or speed up Technology Development processes.
  • Drive technology discussions through the planning process.
  • Create and maintain relationships with selected world-class universities for R&D collaboration.
  • Coach and mentor team members to develop the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with 14+ years of experience, or a Master's Degree with 7+ years of experience, or a PhD with 5+ years of experience.
  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) certification - Master Black Belt or Black Belt (minimum).
  • Model-based Systems engineering knowledge and experience, including system-level decomposition and integration.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in HVAC or Cooling Systems.
  • Strong math and analytical capabilities to emulate physics.
  • Familiarity with optimization techniques such as multi-objective attribute analysis, numerical methods, and finite element algorithms.
  • Proficiency in software tools such as VapCyc, CoilDesigner, Python, Ansys, LS Dyna, Dymola, Mathcad, and Simulink.
  • Experience with Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence applications.
  • Subsystems level development experience.
