About The Position
The Principal Machine Learning Engineer at Western Governors University (WGU) is a pivotal role that combines visionary leadership with hands-on technical expertise. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about leveraging machine learning to enhance educational outcomes and drive innovation within the Ed Tech sector. As a principal member of the engineering team, you will be responsible for leading cross-functional projects that focus on the development and deployment of AI and machine learning products, particularly in the areas of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLM). Your role will involve executing large-scale NLP and LLM models in a cloud environment, ensuring that these systems are scalable, reliable, and performant. In this role, you will work closely with managers to define strategic NLP initiatives and roadmaps, collaborating with business stakeholders and product teams to translate business requirements into actionable NLP capabilities. You will lead the architecture, design, and development of complex AI systems, ensuring that they meet the highest standards of scalability, performance, and maintainability. Your expertise in machine learning solutions will be critical in driving best practices for ML development, including code reviews and documentation. You will oversee the entire machine learning development lifecycle, from model research and data processing to model training, fine-tuning, and deployment. This includes researching, developing, and optimizing state-of-the-art Generative AI, NLP, LLM, and Agent models for various applications. Collaboration will be key, as you will work with Data Engineers to implement data processing pipelines and with MLOps teams to deploy models into production environments. Additionally, you will integrate ML solutions with software, infrastructure, and security teams to ensure seamless operation within WGU's ecosystem. As a technical leader, you will provide mentorship to ML engineers, assisting in their career development and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Staying abreast of the latest advancements in AI, LLM, NLP, and Deep Learning technologies will be essential to drive innovation at WGU. You will also be responsible for communicating project status and updates to leadership and team members, ensuring alignment and transparency across the organization.
