About the position

The Principal Marketing/Public Relations Representative at the Port of San Diego is a key role within the Marketing & Communications Department, focusing on public relations, media relations, and event planning. This position is responsible for strategically communicating the Port's initiatives and responsibilities to the public and stakeholders, producing various communication materials, and managing media inquiries. The ideal candidate will possess strong writing and presentation skills, political acumen, and the ability to handle multiple projects under tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Strategically communicate information and messaging to the public and stakeholders.
  • Write, edit, and distribute news releases, website articles, and other communication materials.
  • Respond to media inquiries and coordinate media interviews as assigned.
  • Monitor and update the accuracy of information on the Port's website.
  • Plan and execute public relations and media events.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work of assigned staff in the Marketing & Communications Department.
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies to enhance the District's image and economic well-being.
  • Manage relationships with external advertising and public relations firms.
  • Serve as the official media spokesperson for the District.
  • Develop and manage community outreach programs to promote the District.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, public relations, communications, business administration, or a related field.
  • At least four years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, public relations, or related fields.
  • Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to produce high-quality communication materials.
  • Experience in managing public relations and media relations functions.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

  • Experience in the cruise ship and tourism industry.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and financial management in marketing contexts.
  • Familiarity with web technologies and social media platforms.
