About the position

The Principal Mechanical CAD Designer - Contractor role at American Energy Storage Innovations, Inc. involves supporting Principal and Senior Engineers in the design and maintenance of mechanical components and systems. This position requires expert-level CAD skills, particularly in SolidWorks, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. The designer will be responsible for creating and managing CAD models, ensuring compliance with engineering specifications, and contributing to product design activities.

Responsibilities

  • Apply mechanical knowledge and engineering principles to design and document mechanical components and systems.
  • Manage CAD information using a disciplined approach and best practices.
  • Clean up third-party models to improve load times.
  • Maintain mates and functional relationships across multiple configurations.
  • Manage data cards and material library database.
  • Utilize toolbox components when practical.
  • Maintain fidelity and functionality of large assemblies and configurations.
  • Participate in product design activities and brainstorming sessions under the direction of principal engineers.
  • Develop system level drawings and definitions for mechanical parts and systems.
  • Assist engineering staff in developing specifications for components and ensuring compliance with requirements.
  • Evaluate supplier specifications and compliance data for COTS items.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical system issues, including building mock-ups or conducting tests.
  • Build, validate, and submit engineering change orders (ECO's) using SolidWorks PDM workflows.
  • Interface with and manage remote CAD detailers and designers.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or technical certificate in Mechanical Design, CAD Design, Engineering, or Engineering Technology with a minimum of 15 years of experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering with a minimum of 7 years of professional experience demonstrating significant CAD usage and expert-level knowledge.
  • Expert level experience with SolidWorks PDM and workflows, specifically with large assemblies, structural weldments, and sheet metal.
  • Experience developing and utilizing toolbox and design libraries.
  • Familiarity with ANSI Y14 drafting standards and proficiency in GD&T principles.
  • Effective communication skills for presenting technical information to customers and suppliers.
