About the position

The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer at Collins Aerospace will be responsible for developing technical solutions throughout the product life cycle, including design, manufacture, integration, and testing of electronic chassis and module assemblies. This role requires a high level of expertise in mechanical engineering, particularly in the aerospace and defense sectors, and involves working independently and collaboratively within a team to solve complex technical problems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, document, implement, integrate, and test mechanical hardware for system design.
  • Solve complex technical problems using ingenuity and creativity while applying sound technical judgment.
  • Conduct thermal and structural analysis using hand calculations and industry-standard tools.
  • Participate in internal and external peer reviews, technical meetings, and program meetings.
  • Provide support to testing, subcontractors, and the factory.
  • Ensure consistent application of mechanical engineering best practices and adherence to RTX processes.
  • Execute as part of a small team during product development, drawing generation, and drawing change incorporation.
  • Collaborate with Program Management, Systems Engineering, Supply Chain, Customers, and other disciplines to develop and manage objectives and requirements for hardware projects.
  • Manage cost and schedule requirements of assigned tasks.
  • Leverage new technologies, methodologies, tools, and processes to optimize hardware development, integration, and testing.

Requirements

  • Typically requires 8 years of experience in mechanical engineering design, analysis, and/or manufacturing engineering for military, aerospace, or related applications.
  • Proficiency with CREO/ProEngineer or similar CAD tool.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to read detailed engineering drawings and specifications, with a basic understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing.
  • Excellent communication skills to explain complex mechanical systems clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) or equivalent experience.

  • Active/current security clearance
  • Knowledge in the design of high-reliability products and tooling
  • Experience in developing detailed mechanical designs and documentation packages for electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Experience in mechanical systems packaging, materials, thermal, and structural analysis.
  • Experience with a gate release process for product development.
  • Experience in mechanical design and development of multi-layer digital, analog, and RF circuit card assemblies.
  • Experience in interconnect design techniques between components, modules, chassis, and subsystems.
  • Experience in cooling techniques for circuit cards and chassis.
  • Experience in a product data management environment such as PTC Windchill.
  • Experience in design support for Special Test Equipment and tooling for IV&V and production efforts.
  • Knowledgeable in quality management systems such as ISO 9001 and AS9100.
