About the position

The Principal Mechanical Engineer will lead the design, development, and implementation of mechanical and electrical systems, focusing on improving production methods and integrating new technologies. This role involves hands-on work in prototyping and validation, as well as collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet operational requirements and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the research of new technologies and recommend technical innovations in machine/system architecture, control methodologies, and industrial/lab automation.
  • Design and develop mechanical and electrical systems for laboratory, production, and agricultural environments.
  • Plan projects, estimate resources, timelines, and costs, and create functional requirements, engineering drawings, test plans, and technical reports.
  • Construct working prototypes to validate performance against requirements.
  • Participate in planning, concept, design, execution stages, risk assessment, prototyping/testing, design reviews, verification, and validation.
  • Collaborate with engineering and science teams to develop innovative solutions.
  • Work with support staff and manufacturing teams to ensure designs are transferable to production sites.
  • Document intellectual property and create patent applications.
  • Collaborate with Safety departments to comply with safety and design standards.
  • Identify and form partnerships with external fabrication suppliers and component vendors.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field.
  • Ability to function as a technical lead throughout the design and development project stages.
  • Hands-on experience constructing complex mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Experience in designing for reliability and manufacturability.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles and procedures related to machine design, safety, and risk assessment.
  • Experience in the selection and application of transducers, sensors, machine controls, and component selection.
  • Expert knowledge of CAD software, particularly SolidWorks.
  • Experience in designing electro-mechanical systems, pneumatic systems, and automated work cells.
  • Experience with prototype building, validation methods, and data analysis.
  • Strong mathematical, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Experience with standard office productivity software; Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% of the time.

Nice-to-haves

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with 10+ years of industry experience or advanced engineering degree with 7+ years of industry experience.
  • Experience in plastic injection molding and mold design.
  • Experience in CFD and/or FEA model simulation.
  • Experience in hydraulic system design.
  • Experience in programming PLCs and microcontrollers with higher-level languages.
  • Experience in electrical and electronics systems.
  • Experience in imaging systems and image processing.
