About the position
Girling Jones is partnering with a dynamic and progressive construction consultancy that specializes in environmentally sustainable and efficient design and Building Services. They are currently expanding their Engineering team and are seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join their forward-thinking team. This role is crucial as it involves leading a team of trained professionals in the mechanical engineering domain. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership experience and a relevant degree, although those with equivalent M&E construction experience and qualifications are also encouraged to apply. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for producing design deliverables, which include drawings, specifications, and reports. The role requires checking calculations and ensuring that the production of detailed drawings meets the appropriate quality and compliance controls, project briefs, and customer requirements. Additionally, the position is client-facing, requiring the engineer to make presentations on selected projects. The role encompasses all traditional duties expected of a Senior or Principal Engineer, emphasizing the importance of leadership and management skills in guiding junior engineers, apprentices, and graduates. Responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical team of trained professionals.
- Produce design deliverables including drawings, specifications, and reports.
- Check calculations and ensure engineering designs meet quality and compliance controls.
- Make client presentations on selected projects.
- Manage Junior Engineers, Apprentices, and Graduates.
- Oversee all traditional duties expected of a Senior/Principal Engineer.
Requirements
- Strong leadership ability and people management skills.
- BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering / Building Services Engineering or relevant equivalent.
- Relevant professional affiliation/chartership (MRICS / IEng / CEng / MCIBSE etc).
- Minimum of 4 years' Building Services design professional background.
- Experience in managing Junior Engineers, Apprentices, and Graduates.
- Understanding of commercial elements of projects.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience in software design including IES, Revit, or Hevacom.
- Chartered status in a relevant engineering discipline.
