About the position

The Principal Mechanical Engineer will lead the design, development, and implementation of mechanical and electrical systems, focusing on improving production methods and integrating new technologies. This role involves hands-on work in prototyping and validation, as well as collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet safety and operational standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the research of new technologies and recommend technical innovations in machine/system architecture and control methodologies.
  • Design and develop mechanical and electrical systems for laboratory, production, and agricultural environments.
  • Plan and design projects, estimating resources, timelines, and costs while creating functional requirements and technical documentation.
  • Construct working prototypes to validate performance against requirements.
  • Participate in planning, concept, design, execution stages, risk assessment, prototyping/testing, and design reviews.
  • Collaborate with engineering and science teams to develop innovative solutions.
  • Work with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are transferable to production sites.
  • Document intellectual property and create patent applications.
  • Collaborate with Safety departments to comply with company and industry safety standards.
  • Identify and form partnerships with external fabrication suppliers and component vendors.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field.
  • Ability to function as a technical lead throughout design and development stages.
  • Hands-on experience constructing complex mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Experience in designing for reliability and manufacturability.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles related to machine design and safety.
  • Experience with transducers, sensors, machine controls, and component selection.
  • Expert knowledge of CAD software, particularly SolidWorks.
  • Experience in designing electro-mechanical systems and material handling equipment.
  • Experience with prototype building and validation methods.
  • Strong mathematical, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Experience with standard office productivity software.

Nice-to-haves

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years of industry experience or advanced engineering degree with 7+ years of experience.
  • Experience in plastic injection molding and mold design.
  • Experience in CFD and/or FEA model simulation.
  • Experience in hydraulic system design.
  • Experience in programming PLCs and microcontrollers.
  • Experience in electrical and electronics systems.
  • Experience in imaging systems and image processing.
