About the position

This position is a remote/home-based role that requires travel up to 60% to various Roofing plants across the domestic U.S. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for managing the development and safe implementation of equipment and installation packages within capital projects for the CertainTeed Roofing manufacturing plants. This includes overseeing process design development, procurement, installation, and commissioning of projects. The incumbent will report to the Project Engineering Manager within the Project Management Office (PMO) and will work closely with Project Managers to meet or exceed expectations regarding scope, cost, schedule, and communication. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will lead assigned capital packages related to design, capital requests, procurement (including scope of works documents, contracts, and change orders), budget, schedule, installation, and commissioning. This role also involves providing mentorship and training to Project Engineers regarding the design phase of projects. The engineer will support Project Managers on assigned projects, ensuring installations are delivered safely, on time, and within budget. Collaboration with the Technical Office is essential to develop designs and processes that optimize performance while considering safety, operations, maintenance, and legal compliance. Additionally, the Principal Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for providing business case and budget estimates to justify capital projects, leading continuous improvement of process plant design in collaboration with the Operational Excellence Team and the Technical Office. The role includes assisting in the startup and commissioning of equipment and mechanical systems onsite, ensuring efficient project transfer to the Operations team, and maintaining fluid communication with various corporate teams throughout the project lifecycle. The engineer will also create required schedules and communicate project status to align with company goals, following the Project Execution Manual Check Lists and applying standard tools at each project stage.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the development and safe implementation of equipment and installation packages within capital projects for CertainTeed Roofing manufacturing plants.
  • Lead assigned capital packages related to design, capital requests, procurement, budget, schedule, installation, and commissioning.
  • Provide mentorship and training to Project Engineers regarding the design phase of projects.
  • Support Project Managers on assigned projects to deliver installations safely, on time, and on budget.
  • Collaborate with the Technical Office to develop designs and processes for optimal performance and compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar Engineering field; Master's Degree or PE preferred.
  • 12+ years of experience in an industrial manufacturing environment; capital project engineering roles preferred.
  • Considerable experience and advanced knowledge of piping systems design in an industrial continuous process manufacturing environment.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of all types of engineering drawings.
  • Experience in sizing, specifying, purchasing, and installing pumps, fans, compressors, burners, and related pipe and ductwork.
  • Experience with material handling, packaging equipment, continuous web, and pollution control systems.
