About the position

The Principal Network SRE at Lumen is responsible for leading and driving the daily activities of the team, mentoring and coaching team members, and managing the implementation of Lumen's Network as a Service (NaaS). This role involves providing technical direction, resolving systemic issues, and ensuring production readiness across various network topologies and applications. The position requires a strong understanding of network technologies and software development methodologies, and it emphasizes collaboration across multiple teams to enhance operational efficiency and service reliability.

Responsibilities

• Lead team's daily activities and partner collaboration for production readiness.
• Curate and implement a production readiness program for onboarding and managing systems components.
• Mentor, guide, and coach team members in their technical skillsets and career development.
• Act as a Subject Matter Expert for network automation platform applications and services.
• Collaborate in the development of new tools and utilities to improve support processes and efficiency.
• Ensure applications/services are running effectively with continuous monitoring and alerting.
• Automate deployment pipelines (CI/CD) and infrastructure provisioning for seamless performance.
• Manage incidents proactively, investigating and resolving service outages and minimizing recurrence.
• Participate in blameless retrospectives after incidents to analyze and implement fixes.
• Document knowledge bases and standardized operational workflows for best practices.
• Coach others in business processes related to applications and services.
• Manage and deliver multiple initiatives while maintaining ownership of key responsibilities.
• Indirectly influence the work of others to drive production readiness.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or master's degree or equivalent experience.
• 12+ years of related experience in software development, systems engineering, and/or networking.
• 3-5 years of demonstrated leadership experience.
• Strong network skills with a preference for previous network architecture/engineering/operations experience.
• Strong understanding of network technologies including Internet, Ethernet, IPVPN, Edge Compute, and Optical transport.
• Strong Layer 2 knowledge of Ethernet switching equipment and architectures.
• Working level experience with protocols such as BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, BFD, LLDP, RPKI, BMP.
• Strong understanding of Ansible, Python, and/or other technologies used in network automation.
• Knowledge of asynchronous programming concepts and distributed systems design.
• Experience with source code repositories and CI/CD practices.
