About the position

The position at Blue Origin is focused on developing nuclear propulsion and power systems for space and lunar applications. As part of the Space Systems Development (SSD) business unit, the role involves collaborating with a diverse team to create innovative solutions that align with the company's vision of sustainable living and working in space. The position requires a commitment to safety and attention to detail, directly impacting the future of space exploration.

Responsibilities

  • Work with advanced concept program organizations to distill high-level requirements into derived requirements for power and rocket propulsion systems.
  • Trade engine and power nuclear reactor systems and components, assessing fluid choices, system configurations, and overall reactor components for optimized solutions.
  • Collaborate with systems and component design engineers to assess conceptual designs, perform system trade studies, and develop integrated design solutions.
  • Assess needs to onboard lower TRL technologies, evaluating cost and risk benefits.
  • Mature and publish system-level reactor architecture, including material and thermodynamic states, operational modes, and functional flow block diagrams.
  • Develop and mature Level 1 reactor engine and power system requirements and verification methodologies, including risk assessments.

Requirements

  • Experience in nuclear propulsion and power systems design and development.
  • Strong understanding of system architecture and requirements derivation.
  • Ability to perform trade studies and system assessments for propulsion and power systems.
  • Experience collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams in engineering environments.
  • Knowledge of technology maturation processes and risk assessment methodologies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with U.S. Government commercial space technology export regulations (ITAR).
  • Experience in space systems development or aerospace engineering.
  • Understanding of advanced materials and thermodynamics related to nuclear systems.
