About the position

The Principal Optical Design Engineer at Coherent Aerospace & Defense is responsible for planning, designing, analyzing, and executing high-performance optical assemblies. This role involves ensuring compliance with optical designs, conducting sensitivity and tolerance analyses, and supporting the fabrication and testing processes to achieve on-time delivery. The engineer will also lead and mentor teams, represent technical expertise, and collaborate across departments to resolve engineering challenges and enhance product manufacturability.

Responsibilities

• Plan, design, analyze, and execute optical designs for high-performance optical assemblies.
• Conduct optical sensitivity and tolerance analysis in coordination with mechanical and integration & test engineering.
• Document optical prescriptions and layouts, and support fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing processes.
• Investigate and resolve engineering problems related to manufacturing of optical products.
• Mentor and lead optical design and analysis activities for development programs.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in optical, mechanical, electrical, or manufacturing engineering, optical-physics, or a related discipline.
• Minimum of 9 years of related experience in a professional role with a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience; 7 years with a Master's or higher degree.
• Mastery level understanding of physical optics, optical aberration theory, and optical system performance criteria.
• Experience with conceptual and detailed computer-aided design of optical imaging systems.

Nice-to-haves

• Expert understanding of optical sensors and technology, including design and modeling of various waveband systems.
• Advanced understanding of optical component or system test and metrology instruments.
• Experience with optical alignment techniques and tools.
