About the position

The Principal Product Designer will play a crucial role in supporting the Calcite Design System at Esri, collaborating with over 50 product teams to create engaging and consistent user experiences across mapping applications. This position involves conducting user research, educating teams on design standards, enhancing the Figma environment, and ensuring accessibility compliance, all while fostering strong partnerships within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough user research to grasp product needs and integrate insights into new component and feature enhancements.
  • Lead design review sessions with Calcite team members and stakeholders to incorporate feedback into your work.
  • Educate over 50+ Esri product teams on Calcite standards through presentations, demos, and Design Office Hours.
  • Collaborate with internal research teams to obtain insights for refining the design system continuously.
  • Serve as a primary liaison, cultivating strong relationships with Esri product teams for smooth integration of Calcite components.
  • Provide regular updates and communications to stakeholders about Calcite efforts and initiatives.
  • Contribute to the architecture and continuous improvement of the Calcite Figma environment.
  • Work closely with designers and front-end engineers to enhance UI kits, foundations, and tokens.
  • Ensure adherence to WCAG and other industry standards within the Calcite Design System.
  • Guide product teams in crafting inclusive, accessible products and maintain detailed documentation for Calcite components.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience designing and delivering products for both web and mobile platforms.
  • Portfolio showcasing successful management of design systems.
  • Extensive experience with WCAG 2.0/Section 508 Compliance and inclusive design practices.
  • Ability to facilitate workshops and present to large audiences.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Passion for continuous improvement and innovative design practices.
  • Experience using Figma and adhering to established pattern libraries.
  • Bachelor's degree in human-computer interaction, user experience, interaction design, applied social science, or a related field.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's in human factors, HCI, graphic design, or related field.
  • Familiarity with GitHub and front-end technologies (Stencil, JavaScript, Angular, Ember, React, HTML, CSS, Storybook).
  • Experience coding interactive prototypes or component interactive samples.
  • Experience maintaining Storybook.
