About the position

At 23andMe, design plays a pivotal role in how people think about genetics, ancestry, health, and lifestyle. As a Principal Product Designer, you will help facilitate the creation of highly imaginative, intuitive, and beautiful experiences that empower individuals to gain insight into and take action on their personal genetic information. You will be part of a multidisciplinary design organization that is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the realm of genetic insight and personal understanding. Your work will involve understanding user needs, simplifying complex concepts into engaging experiences, and leading design efforts through best practices and innovative thinking. You will collaborate closely with the Design Director to develop and execute interactive systems, ensuring that accessibility, information architecture, user interface, animation, and the overall product lifecycle are effectively managed. Your role will also require you to communicate design recommendations through sketches, wireframes, high-fidelity comps, interactive prototypes, and specifications that enhance user experience across various platforms. You will contribute to the design team's culture by fostering curiosity, refinement, and excitement in the craft of design, creatively transforming problems into additive solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Advocate for the user by understanding their needs and challenging the impossible.
  • Collaborate with peers, partners, and stakeholders to simplify concepts into exciting and engaging experiences.
  • Lead design efforts through best practices and attention to detail, driving forward the overall design strategy.
  • Execute interactive systems development, focusing on accessibility, information architecture, user interface, animation, and product lifecycle.
  • Articulate design recommendations and decisions through sketches, wireframes, high-fidelity comps, and interactive prototypes.
  • Contribute to the design team's culture through curiosity and refinement, creatively transforming problems into solutions.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of work experience in design with a proven ability to recognize and stay ahead of design trends.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating compelling interactive design work and a unique perspective on the creative process.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality work while advocating for design and user experience continuity.
  • Proficiencies in software applications such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Figma, Principle, Unity, Xcode, and Cinema 4D.
  • Ability to pivot through creative problem-solving and a genuine passion for health, science, and education.
  • Bachelor's Degree in HCI, Graphic Design, Media Arts, or a similar field.
  • Experience working on platforms like TV, Wearables, and Hardware.
  • Prototyping or animation experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with user research methodologies.
  • Familiarity with genetic health risk reports and consumer genetics.
  • Knowledge of FDA regulations related to genetic information.
