About the position

The Principal Research Scientist II, AI / ML Team Lead at AbbVie is a leadership role focused on integrating advanced AI and machine learning methodologies into the drug discovery process. This position is pivotal in guiding the strategic direction of AI/ML applications within the Computational Drug Discovery (CDD) team, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of drug development across various therapeutic areas. The role involves collaboration with internal and external experts, managing multiple projects, and ensuring the successful deployment of innovative AI/ML tools to support drug discovery initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the scientific and strategic incorporation of AI/ML tools into existing CDD workflows.
  • Interface closely with CDD members to identify opportunities for incorporating AI/ML strategies to enhance drug discovery contributions.
  • Collaborate with experts to leverage external innovation and manage external research collaborations.
  • Make decisions based on the review of available information and data.
  • Manage multiple projects within the AI/ML team to enable pipeline-driving science.
  • Identify, develop, optimize, validate, and deploy innovative methods for data mining, molecular generation, scoring, and modeling using AI/ML models and big data.
  • Interface with AbbVie IT infrastructure teams to ensure effective deployment of AI/ML capabilities.

Requirements

  • BS, MS, or Ph.D. in computational chemistry or a related discipline with typically 16+ years (BS), 14+ years (MS), or 8+ years (PhD) of experience.
  • Managerial experience leading a scientific research team.
  • Strong track record of people, technical, and research project management with significant impact.
  • Strong track record of high-impact scientific achievement including a robust publication record.
  • Established network with key academic and industrial opinion leaders in machine learning and physics-based computational research.
  • Knowledge and experience in state-of-the-art modeling, simulation, and machine learning technologies/workflows.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to navigate multiple stakeholders while engaging and motivating staff.
