About the position

The Principal Scientist in Biology-Discovery at Merck Sharp & Dohme will lead a creative and flexible Automation & Engineering team focused on enhancing drug discovery processes through innovative engineering solutions. This role requires a deep expertise in bioengineering and laboratory automation, with responsibilities including identifying automation opportunities, optimizing workflows, and mentoring team members. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in advancing the company's mission to improve global health through scientific excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Identify new automation and engineering opportunities throughout Quantitative Biosciences and the company's Research Labs.
  • Design and implement solutions to increase throughput of translational models and deeper phenotyping for target and therapeutic discovery.
  • Deploy team members to operate and train others on automation solutions as needed.
  • Optimize the utilization of existing automation solutions and related workflows within global Quantitative Biosciences.
  • Lead and develop the Automation & Engineering team to maximize impact and career growth.
  • Monitor emerging technologies in bioengineering and laboratory automation to assess their applicability to drug discovery.
  • Participate in yearly planning of strategic investments in new bioengineering capabilities and laboratory automation.

Requirements

  • An advanced degree in bioengineering, biology, pharmacology, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 14+ years relevant experience for a BS degree, 10+ years for a Master's degree, or 8+ years for a Ph.D.
  • Demonstrated experience in integrated engineering and/or automation platform design for drug discovery.
  • Ability to design experiments, interpret results, and utilize information for automated workflow development.
  • Excellent track record of providing mentorship and guidance to direct reports and peers.
  • Strong communication skills with a broad range of stakeholders, including senior leaders and external collaborators.
  • Robust understanding of drug discovery and clinical development.
  • Experience with LabView programming and various industry instruments.
