About the position

Moderna is expanding its footprint to Seattle to further its mission of delivering impactful mRNA medicines. The new technology hub in Seattle will focus on software product development across various domains including Commercial, Data & Machine Learning, Cloud Infrastructure, Security, and Engineering Excellence (dev tools). The Cloud and Digital Infrastructure (CDI) organization is pivotal in transforming Moderna's enterprise use of both Cloud and on-premises computing. Through a commitment to innovation and a passion for changing the future of medicine, CDI aims to streamline processes and establish secure, scalable foundations for a wide range of internal customers. We are seeking an experienced Site Reliability Engineer who possesses robust technical expertise and a background in supporting digital infrastructure, both on-premises and in the cloud, with a strong focus on development and operations (DevOps). This individual should be an advocate for automation while also being hands-on to ensure that customer needs are met effectively. The ideal candidate will be a proven partner who can communicate and collaborate effectively with engineers and business stakeholders alike. They will proactively identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support both legacy and new technology solutions to enhance infrastructure, with a keen focus on optimizing for stability and cost. A successful candidate will have a strong track record of tenacity and experience in a fast-paced, metrics-driven environment. They should be comfortable executing in a rapidly changing environment while maintaining high standards of quality and safety. The role requires composure under pressure and the ability to collaborate with peers, as well as mentor junior engineers. The responsibilities include leading team projects, mentoring team members, contributing to team architecture, troubleshooting complex problems, and defining engineering standards to enhance operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Lead team projects and actively mentor and develop team members.
  • Contribute to team architecture and enhance resilience, performance, and business value.
  • Impact team goals, technical strategies, dependencies, resilience, and performance.
  • Troubleshoot complex problems and decompose difficult challenges into manageable work.
  • Define and apply engineering, testing, and operational excellence standards to the team and organization.
  • Support customers through participation in regular on-call duties and executing planned changes to maintain the environment.
  • Partner with cross-organizational teams to drive improvements in supportability and maintainability of platforms and systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technology or scientific field, or 5 years of equivalent professional experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 4+ years of programming experience with at least one modern language, such as Python, Ruby, or PowerShell.
  • 6+ years of job-related experience in a non-internship role.
  • 2+ years of experience designing or architecting new and existing systems for reliability and scaling.
  • Experience with modern full-stack software applications, either built or off-the-shelf.
  • Experience documenting technical systems, user workflows, and user requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with traditional IT infrastructure as well as the Cloud, preferably AWS.
  • Experience leading the design, build, and deployment of complex and performant software/system solutions in a production environment.
  • Experience in a regulated environment.
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and production operations.
  • Self-directed and self-motivated; excellent communicator and collaborator.
