About the position

The Principal Software Maintenance Engineer will lead a new team within the Red Hat Experience Engineering Sustaining Engineering team, focusing on enhancing the long-term product experience for Red Hat OpenShift customers. This role involves collaborating with Product Engineering to manage extended product maintenance, addressing bugs and CVEs, and driving the patch review process. The engineer will also develop automation tools to improve patch delivery efficiency and quality, while mentoring team members and ensuring high standards in product maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Guide the development of new Red Hat OpenShift product maintenance offerings.
  • Drive daily activities of product maintenance engineering teams.
  • Resolve and proactively address critical issues impacting Red Hat OpenShift's long-term success.
  • Be responsible for the delivery of maintenance streams within the Red Hat OpenShift portfolio.
  • Lead collaboration with developer and QE counterparts, product and project managers, and release engineering teams globally.
  • Diagnose the root cause of failures and backport CVE and bug fixes to stable release streams.
  • Coordinate multiple teams involved with patch delivery.
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor tests, integrating automated tests into a continuous integration workflow.
  • Develop onboarding and training for new team members.
  • Mentor team members.

Requirements

  • Outstanding debugging, troubleshooting, and analytical skills.
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering and/or quality engineering.
  • Ability to work Hybrid in Raleigh, NC.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related engineering field, or relevant professional experience.
  • Experience developing code at scale on complex source control structures.
  • Demonstrated patience and execution when working on detailed tasks.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with a global team.
  • Multi-tasking skills and ability to deliver consistently under tight deadlines.
  • Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience collaborating in open source software communities.
  • Experience developing and maintaining enterprise production software.
  • Solid skills and background in Red Hat OpenShift or a similar Kubernetes distribution.
  • Familiarity with DeploymentConfig, BuildConfig, image registry, or image streams.
  • Expertise programming in Go and/or Python.
  • Experience with agile software methodologies including test-based development, test planning, test cases design, test script automation, and documentation.
  • Experience with cloud computing, e.g., AWS, Microsoft Azure, GCP.
  • Experience using GitLab and Git in contributor and maintainer roles.
  • Experience writing and debugging CI tests.
  • Experience with CVE systems and related solution delivery processes.
  • Experience with platform observability tools including monitoring, logging, and profiling.
