About the position

The Principal/Sr Principal Structural Analysis and Test Engineer at Northrop Grumman is responsible for performing static and dynamic structural analysis and testing of spacecraft systems or subsystems. This role involves collaborating with a team of mechanical engineers to ensure designs meet specifications and requirements for space applications. The engineer will develop innovative solutions, conduct test programs, and release technical documents based on analysis results. This position offers opportunities to contribute to significant technological advancements in space exploration and national defense.

Responsibilities

  • Performing static and dynamic structure analysis.
  • Reviewing requirements for materials, structure systems & subsystems.
  • Selecting appropriate technical information and data from applicable products.
  • Determining the technical principles involved and computing engineering characteristics to ensure consistency with specifications.
  • Releasing results as 'technical documents' after review by senior team members.
  • Developing innovative solutions and elaborating on design concepts.
  • Evaluating completed designs with supervisors and making necessary modifications.
  • Developing, coordinating, and conducting test programs required to evaluate design work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) or related area, preferably Mechanical Engineering with a focus in Structural Analysis.
  • 5+ years of experience for Engineer 3 or 9+ years for Engineer 4, or a Master's Degree with 3+ years for Engineer 3 or 7+ years for Engineer 4, or a Ph.D.
  • Ability to perform structural engineering tasks associated with analysis, design, and/or testing of structures.
  • Experience with Mechanical Analysis tools such as NX FEMAP/NASTRAN, ABAQUS, HYPERMESH, or equivalent spacecraft structural analysis tools.
  • Experience utilizing MATLAB.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Structural Analysis of Dynamic Test Fixtures & Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE).
  • Experience with types of testing such as static load testing, sine/random vibration, mechanical shock testing, vibro-acoustic testing, and dynamics/kinematics testing.
  • Experience with Static/Dynamics Test Planning & Execution (Test Director Role).
  • Ability to coordinate planning of tests with multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholders.
  • Ability to create and maintain detailed and accurate test schedules in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with preparing and presenting comprehensive Test Readiness Review (TRR) packages.
  • Experience with troubleshooting efforts, failure investigations, and implementation of lessons learned related to testing.
  • Test/Analysis Finite Element Model (FEM) correlation experience.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
