About the position

The Principal/Sr Principal Structural Analysis and Test Engineer at Northrop Grumman will be responsible for performing static and dynamic structural analysis and testing of spacecraft systems or subsystems. This role involves collaborating with a team of mechanical engineers to ensure designs meet specifications and requirements for space applications, while also developing innovative solutions and conducting test programs to evaluate design work.

Responsibilities

  • Performing static and dynamic structure analysis.
  • Reviewing requirements for materials, structure systems & subsystems.
  • Selecting appropriate technical information and data from applicable products.
  • Determining the technical principles involved and identifying the design path forward.
  • Releasing results as 'technical documents' after review by senior team members.
  • Developing innovative solutions and elaborating on design concepts.
  • Evaluating completed designs with supervisors and other technical groups, making necessary modifications.
  • Developing, coordinating, and conducting test programs required to evaluate design work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) or related area, preferably Mechanical Engineering with a focus in Structural Analysis.
  • 5+ years of experience for Engineer 3 or 9+ years for Engineer 4, or a Master's Degree with 3+ years (Engineer 3) or 7+ years (Engineer 4).
  • Ability to perform structural engineering tasks associated with analysis, design, and/or testing of structures.
  • Experience with Mechanical Analysis tools such as NX FEMAP/NASTRAN, ABAQUS, HYPERMESH, or equivalent spacecraft structural analysis tools.
  • Experience utilizing MATLAB.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Structural Analysis of Dynamic Test Fixtures & Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE).
  • Experience with testing types such as static load testing, sine/random vibration, mechanical shock testing, vibro-acoustic testing, and dynamics/kinematics testing.
  • Experience with Static/Dynamics Test Planning & Execution (Test Director Role).
  • Ability to coordinate planning of tests with multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholders.
  • Experience with preparing and presenting comprehensive Test Readiness Review (TRR) packages.
  • Experience with troubleshooting efforts, failure investigations, and implementation of lessons learned related to testing.
  • Test/Analysis Finite Element Model (FEM) correlation experience.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
