About the position

The Principal/Sr. Principal Systems Engineer - Mission Thread Lead at Northrop Grumman is responsible for leading the Mission Planning and Scheduling Thread for a Mission Integration program within the Space Security business area. This role involves developing and reviewing system requirements, ensuring comprehensive system design, and providing subject matter expertise. The position requires a strong technical background and offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge programs in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and review requirements, verification plans, and architecture at all levels of the System
  • Ensure the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints
  • Perform functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation, and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into lower level specifications
  • Integrate complex design elements across multiple teams and vendors of the Phoenix program
  • Coordinate with all levels of the program to ensure a comprehensive system design
  • Ensure ground system software teams are developing and designing their content that meet the system requirements
  • Provide subject matter expertise for the Thread to the program
  • Brief program leadership, customers, and stakeholders on the Thread
  • Engage in formal and informal mentoring to support knowledge transfer and talent development
  • Develop and improve on-orbit system-test procedures
  • Perform demonstrations and conduct briefings explaining test procedures and processes
  • Provide on-console operational support and aid in the investigation and diagnosis of unexpected system signatures

Requirements

  • Must have an active U.S. Government DoD Top Secret security clearance at time of application, current and within scope, with the ability to obtain and maintain SCI approval/access
  • Principal Engineer Systems: BS degree in Engineering or related technical field and 5 years of applicable experience, or an MS Degree and 3 years of applicable experience
  • Senior Principal Engineer Systems: Bachelors in Engineering, Physics, or related STEM Degree with 9 years of experience in a related engineering field such as mechanical, electrical, aerospace and/or operations
  • Strong technical background in orbital mechanics/astrodynamics
  • Experience in requirements management, system architecture development, and CONOPs
  • Experience in RPO mission design and satellite ground software

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience coordinating the efforts of diverse stakeholders
  • Proficiency in any modeling and simulation tools: Cameo, STK, Matlab, AFSIM, Python
  • Extensive knowledge of different astrodynamic coordinate frames such as ECI and RIC
