About the position

The Principal Systems Engineer for Embedded Microsystems Architecture at Draper will lead the development and management of requirements, architecture, interface documentation, and system specifications for advanced systems in mission domains such as secure communications and autonomous vehicles. This role requires collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to innovate microelectronics solutions throughout the system development lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Independently drive solutions to complex problems by developing requirements and proposing ways forward when customer requirements are unclear or incomplete.
  • Lead medium-sized teams (5-10 people) and align them towards program goals while building trust within the team.
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Systems Engineering.
  • Provide insights and suggest design modifications based on analysis outcomes.
  • Identify program/system-level technical risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Develop, document, and teach best practices to less experienced engineers.
  • Mentor team members by recognizing their strengths and weaknesses and providing constructive feedback.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, or related field; Master's degree or higher preferred.
  • 7-10+ years of experience as a systems engineer or in a related role.
  • Practical experience with simulation-based performance analysis and the systems engineering process.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Highly organized with a system-level perspective.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the development of System Security documentation per Government requirements.
  • Experience planning and leading Systems Engineering Technical Reviews.
  • Experience working with modern data bus/electrical interfaces for flight/space systems.
  • Experience in writing innovative R&D proposals to commercial and government sponsors.
  • Understanding of cryptographic key management and public key infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with space avionics aspects such as environmental testing and radiation hardening.
