A world leader in transportation security is seeking a Principal Systems Engineer for its Abingdon location. The successful candidate will serve as the technical authority for interpreting, planning, organizing, executing, and directing assignments for integrated system development projects of moderate complexity, with supervisory oversight. This role requires a BS degree in a related discipline such as Electrical Engineering (EE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), or Systems Engineering (SE), along with over 8 years of experience in systems engineering and a solid understanding of ISO 9001 quality system requirements. In collaboration with program management, the Principal Systems Engineer will determine and organize the work scope for integrated product teams and subcontractors. Responsibilities include visiting subcontractors and suppliers as necessary to ensure effective communication, understanding, and testing of requirements and interfaces. The engineer will author specifications and statements of work documents and participate in the subcontractor teaming and selection process. The role also involves providing leadership, technical guidance, and support to engineers, scientists, technicians, contractors, or subcontractors assigned to the project. The Principal Systems Engineer will support business development activities, conduct work breakdown structure (WBS) task estimates, and engage in fact-finding activities to inform bid/no-bid decisions. They will produce proposals, specifications, white papers, and product requirements documentation, while planning, coordinating, and reporting on engineering baselines and ongoing project estimates. Identifying cost, schedule, and technical risks, along with proposing risk mitigation plans, is also a critical aspect of this position. The engineer will maintain status updates to program management and interact professionally with government and commercial customer representatives to understand their needs, specifications, and requirements. They will work closely with various engineering disciplines to identify and refine architecture solutions, classify system requirements, and define appropriate compliance scoring functions and verification plans. The role requires performing functional requirement decomposition activities and utilizing requirements management software tools to manage and disseminate requirements effectively. Additionally, the Principal Systems Engineer will develop, refine, and communicate processes to ensure compliance with defined development processes and guidelines. They will evaluate team progress, report results, and recommend changes as necessary to meet requirements. The engineer will prepare documents associated with government and commercial development activities and plan and coordinate engineering activities for key milestones such as SRR, PDR, CDR, and TRR. They will also plan resources to support manufacturing during production start-up and present technical briefing materials as required for meetings with government, suppliers, or other technical personnel. Compliance with company health, safety, and environmental policies, as well as U.S. export control and security regulations, is essential. Other duties may be assigned as required.
