About the position

The Principal Systems Engineer at Hologic is responsible for defining and developing technical platforms and system specifications for advanced medical imaging systems and devices. This role involves collaboration across engineering and cross-functional teams to enhance clinical outcomes and patient experiences. The engineer will lead architectural discussions, ensure design integrity, and drive continuous improvement in product development.

Responsibilities

  • Owns the system architecture design and implementation within R&D group from design initiations through commercial launch.
  • Responsible for defining and communicating a shared technical and architectural vision for the solutions being developed.
  • Maintains an expert level of understanding of our products and their use in clinical practice to design, develop and test our next generation products.
  • Leads high level architectural discussions and engineering activities, making high-level design choices and framing technical standards.
  • Determines which processes, tools, and applications the development team should use.
  • Ensures development reflects the design that has been put forward and the system or solution under development is fit for its intended purpose.
  • Collaborates on design, design transfer, design changes and process changes.
  • Serves as primary system architect for new product development.
  • Influences the shaping of future products by contributing to the framework (architecture) used across multiple products or systems.
  • Acts as a change agent and drives a culture of continuous learning, improvement, and ideation.
  • Champions opportunities to introduce new technologies, systems, methods, and controls to improve design, quality, cost, or time-to-market.
  • Leads complex design projects and the creation of the product roadmap.
  • Recognized cross functionally as a go-to technical expert for guidance and leadership in the development of systems architecture.
  • Provides multi-layered technical expertise for system development.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop and review architectural designs for Hologic's systems.
  • Researches and evaluates emerging technologies and determines systems framework to support them.
  • Works in cross-functional teams to deliver product level features and requirements.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and resolves system design weaknesses.
  • Advises and provides technical guidance to other engineers.
  • Guides and mentors peers to promote learning, development and knowledge transfer.
  • Promotes and leads the development of learning, creativity, and innovation throughout the organization.
  • Identifies and leads complex projects that drive meaningful improvements with a significant positive impact on product quality and manufacturing efficiency and costs.
  • Establishes collaborative relationships within the function and creates links with experts within the Hologic network and outside.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops.
  • Trains and mentors lower-level engineers.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience with a non-technical degree or 8+ years with a Master's degree, or 5+ years with a PhD.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of systems engineering methodologies and physical/mathematical modeling tools.
  • Expert knowledge of hardware and software components within complex systems.
  • Thorough understanding of medical devices, FDA QSR, and ISO 13485 standards.
  • Understanding of relevant risk and electrical safety standards, such as ISO 14971 and IEC-60601-1.
  • Understanding of the software life cycle for medical devices in accordance with IEC 62304.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt communication style to different audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple large-scale projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to lead and motivate a team and collaborate cross-functionally.

  • Experience with Agile methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Oracle systems.
