About the position

The Principal Technical Governance Mechanical Engineer will serve as a global subject matter expert in mechanical engineering for Microsoft's datacenter infrastructure. This role involves providing technical direction, supporting the Technical Excellence program, and collaborating with internal and external teams to enhance datacenter cooling strategies and systems. The position is integral to the design and construction of large-scale datacenters that support Microsoft's cloud services, ensuring high standards of quality and innovation in mechanical engineering practices.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a global mechanical subject matter expert for datacenter projects.
  • Support the Technical Excellence program and projects globally.
  • Set and provide global technical direction for internal and external mechanical SMEs.
  • Design complex mechanical engineering systems for datacenters.
  • Manage multiple concurrent initiatives with minimal oversight.
  • Develop and improve existing processes, procedures, and documentation.
  • Facilitate cross-group collaboration and stakeholder alignment.
  • Communicate frequently with senior leadership on strategic direction and technical matters.
  • Lead teams of engineers in advanced engineering processes related to datacenters.
  • Conduct equipment reviews and factory witness testing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with 6+ years of experience, or a Master's Degree with 4+ years, or a Doctorate with 3+ years, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years' experience designing complex mechanical engineering systems in datacenters.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and government security screening requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Management of internal customer requirements and design.
  • Deep understanding of HVAC load calculations and psychometrics.
  • Excellent knowledge of industry standards, building codes, and regulations.
  • Ability to lead teams in advanced engineering processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, AutoCAD, REVIT, and BIM.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineering.
