The position of Prison Counselor at the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is a vital role within the prison system, focusing on the rehabilitation and treatment of inmates. As a professional prison counselor, you will be responsible for conducting assessments of prisoners' behaviors and progress in treatment programs. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of various psychological and social factors that affect inmate behavior and rehabilitation. You will work directly within prison housing units, ensuring that the environment is conducive to treatment and rehabilitation while adhering to established policies and procedures. In this position, you will engage with inmates to evaluate their progress and provide guidance and support as they navigate their treatment programs. You will also be involved in maintaining the housing unit, which includes ensuring compliance with safety and security protocols. The role is classified as a drug and alcohol randomly tested position (DART), emphasizing the importance of maintaining a drug-free environment. Responsibilities

  • Evaluate prisoners' behavior to determine progress made through treatment programs.
  • Maintain the housing unit in accordance with policy and procedure.

  • Ensure compliance with safety and security protocols within the housing unit.

Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, psychology, social work, or a related field.
  • For Prison Counselor 10: One year of professional experience providing prison counseling services equivalent to a Prison Counselor 9.
  • For Prison Counselor P11: Two years of professional experience providing prison counseling services, including one year equivalent to a Prison Counselor 10.
  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major and one year of Department of Corrections' experience may be considered as an alternate qualification.
  • Education level typically acquired through the completion of high school and one year as an Assistant Resident Unit Supervisor or Corrections Shift Supervisor may also qualify.
