About the position

The Privacy Program Specialist at the Smithsonian Institution plays a crucial role in the administration and management of the information privacy program. This position supports the Smithsonian Privacy Officer in ensuring compliance with privacy laws and policies, managing Personally Identifiable Information (PII), and facilitating training and incident response related to privacy breaches.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a privacy subject matter specialist responsible for the coordination, implementation, and management of daily operations of the privacy program.
  • Develop policy and procedural guidance for use by Smithsonian employees and affiliated persons.
  • Conduct reviews and assessments of information technology and paper records systems to ensure compliance with applicable privacy laws and SI policy.
  • Conduct research for areas of Privacy Program improvement and develop recommendations for appropriate action plans.
  • Develop and facilitate training workshops on privacy programs and initiatives for managers and employees.
  • Provide breach/incident response planning and response support to incidents involving suspected or confirmed breaches of personally identifiable information.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service.
  • Experience in administering a privacy information program for an organization.
  • Experience with implementing laws and guidelines related to privacy information.
  • Experience in preparing privacy policy and procedural guidance.
  • Experience in evaluating compliance with organizational policies and applicable law.
  • Experience in conducting training on privacy procedures.
  • Experience in overseeing personally identifiable information protection processes and procedures.
  • CIPP certification is desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) or other organizations.
