About the position

As a member of Google's Government Affairs and Public Policy team, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of technology through effective policy advocacy. This position is part of a diverse global government affairs team that collaborates across various regions, product areas, and functions. You will leverage your creativity and intellectual excellence alongside your organizational skills to manage multiple campaigns, projects, and initiatives. Your primary responsibility will be to advocate for Google, ensuring that external perspectives are integrated into the company's strategic direction. You will be passionate about the opportunity to influence how technology is developed and utilized for the benefit of all stakeholders. The Centers of Excellence (COE) organization serves as the strategic hub within Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP), providing essential issue and functional expertise. The COE is responsible for horizon-scanning policy issues that impact Google's business and developing strategies for regulatory and political engagement. Within this framework, the Privacy, Safety, and Security (PSS) COE focuses on critical areas such as privacy, security, child safety, and government access to data, particularly in relation to the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. In this role, you will provide policy expertise on a variety of privacy-related issues, including law enforcement access to data, surveillance laws, and international data flows. You will also help shape Google's participation in external forums and engage with stakeholders to address significant public policy challenges. Your understanding of both U.S. and global political and regulatory contexts regarding privacy and government surveillance will be essential in anticipating and navigating the evolving policy debates. The GAPP team is dedicated to engaging with government officials, legislators, and regulators to identify key policy issues and articulate Google's perspective effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of Google's policy strategy on diverse privacy topics such as government surveillance and law enforcement access to data, encryption, international data flows, and new privacy laws and regulations.
  • Analyze current and proposed policies, identifying and monitoring privacy policy issues that may affect Google.
  • Develop company-wide positions, narratives, collateral, and programming related to privacy policy.
  • Engage with external stakeholders on legislative, regulatory, and policy initiatives, shaping Google's participation in external forums and working groups.
  • Facilitate Google's engagement with policymakers and regulators.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 years of experience in policy analysis and campaigns, particularly on technology issues or related policy environments.
  • 4 years of experience working within government, think tanks, public interest groups, technology industry groups, or corporate public policy organizations.
  • Experience in public policy, privacy, and issues relating to surveillance and government access frameworks.
