About The Position

The PRN Patient Care Technician in the Mother Baby Care Unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is responsible for assisting nursing staff in providing comprehensive care to antepartum and postpartum obstetrical patients. This role involves a variety of patient care tasks, including monitoring vital signs, performing diagnostic procedures, and ensuring patient comfort and hygiene. The technician will work closely with patients and their families, supporting their needs during recovery and facilitating communication with healthcare staff.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and follow instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, family members, and healthcare staff.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of principles of sanitation and health hazards.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, instruments, and supplies.
  • Ability to collect patient data and maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills.

Responsibilities

  • Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
  • Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, and Foley catheter removal.
  • Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative skin preparation, dressing changes, and specimen collection.
  • Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
  • Directly provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
  • Turn, position, and ambulate patients.
  • Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
  • Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record patients' intake.
  • Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output.
  • Participate in nursing care conferences and report pertinent patient information to the nurse in charge.
  • Provide comfort measures through social interactions and maintain cleanliness of the unit.
  • Assemble and maintain equipment and supplies for diagnostic or treatment procedures.
