About the position

The PRN Pharmacy Technician position at Atrium Health involves assisting registered pharmacists in performing various technical duties related to the preparation and distribution of medications. This role is crucial in ensuring that patients receive their medications accurately and safely. The pharmacy technician will work under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist and will be responsible for filling and delivering medication orders for patients of all age groups. This includes answering and screening telephone calls, performing cart fills, refilling automated dispensing machines, and restocking emergency boxes and kits. The technician will also process charges and credits for medications, document and deliver controlled substances, and monitor medication inventory levels, placing orders to restock as necessary. In addition to these responsibilities, the pharmacy technician will be involved in compounding and repackaging oral medications, as well as compounding sterile preparations while adhering to USP 797 guidelines. The role may also require the technician to compound hazardous high-risk preparations following USP 800 guidelines. Training and orienting new team members to department workflow and procedures is also a key function of this position. The work environment primarily consists of the pharmacy, with responsibilities that may extend to delivering medications to nursing units. The position requires physical stamina, as it involves considerable walking, standing, and the ability to lift and push carts weighing up to 50 pounds. The technician must also utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize exposure to hazardous agents and take necessary precautions to avoid injuries such as needle sticks or minor cuts.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a pharmacy technician-training program preferred.
  • Pharmacy Technician Board Certificate preferred.
  • 6 months prior Pharmacy Technician experience preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data entry and typing.
  • Prior experience in a hospital or inpatient pharmacy setting.
