About the position

Southern Tennessee Regional Health System is seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse to join our Emergency Services team. This position is critical in providing direct patient care to individuals in need, utilizing the nursing process in accordance with established standards of practice. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of care interventions, including medication administration, specimen collection, and clinical treatments, while ensuring that all patient care is documented accurately. The role requires monitoring and recording patient conditions, as well as communicating effectively with the care team, physicians, patients, and their families. In addition to direct patient care, the Registered Nurse will assist patients with daily living activities, such as personal hygiene, nutrition, and ambulation. Collaboration across disciplines is essential to coordinate patient care, including transfers, discharges, and addressing spiritual and psychosocial support needs. The nurse will also evaluate the learning needs of patients and their families, providing education tailored to their age, culture, and specific circumstances. Advocacy for the physical and emotional well-being of patients is a key component of this role. The Registered Nurse may also be required to perform duties typically assigned to Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA), Medical Assistants (MA), or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) as needed. Participation in staff meetings, in-service training, and various committees is expected, along with adherence to the policies and procedures of Southern Tennessee Regional Health System. The position may involve working scheduled shifts, including overtime, and accepting call schedules as directed. Compliance with the dress code and maintaining a professional appearance is mandatory. This role may expose the nurse to bloodborne pathogens, and adherence to the STRHS Standard of Behavior is required. The position reports directly to the Director of the Emergency Department and requires a minimum of an Associate's degree, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a stressful environment are essential for success in this role. Certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) are required within specified timeframes after hire, with Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) preferred. Current and active Registered Nurse Licensure for the State of Tennessee is also required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care using the nursing process in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice.
  • Performs plan of care interventions, including medication administration, specimen collection, and clinical treatments.
  • Documents patient care given and monitors, records, and communicates patient condition to the care team, physician, patient, and family.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
  • Collaborates across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including transfers, discharges, and referrals.
  • Evaluates learning needs of patients and/or families and provides appropriate education.
  • Advocates for the physical and emotional well-being of patients.
  • May perform duties of CNA, MA, or LPN as needed.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service training, and committees as assigned.
  • Adheres to and supports policies and procedures of STRHS.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree required; BSN preferred.
  • Current and active Registered Nurse Licensure for the State of Tennessee.
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire.
  • AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification within 6 months of hire.
  • AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and in a stressful environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification preferred.
