About the position

Southern Tennessee Regional Health System is seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse to join our Emergency Services team. This position is critical in providing direct patient care in accordance with the nursing process and applicable standards of practice. The Registered Nurse will be responsible for performing various interventions as part of the care plan, which includes medication administration, specimen collection, and clinical treatments. The role also involves documenting patient care, monitoring and recording patient conditions, and effectively communicating with the care team, physicians, patients, and their families. In addition to direct patient care, the Registered Nurse will assist patients with activities of daily living, such as personal hygiene, nutrition, and ambulation. Collaboration across disciplines is essential to coordinate patient care, including transfers, discharges, referrals, and addressing spiritual and psychosocial support needs. The nurse will evaluate the learning needs of patients and their families, providing education tailored to their age, culture, condition, and circumstances. Advocacy for the physical and emotional well-being of patients is a key component of this role. The Registered Nurse may also be required to perform duties of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) as needed. Participation in staff meetings, in-service training, and committees is expected, along with adherence to the policies and procedures of Southern Tennessee Regional Health System. The position requires working scheduled shifts, including overtime when necessary, and accepting call schedules as directed. Compliance with the dress code and maintaining a professional appearance is mandatory. This role may involve occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, and adherence to the STRHS Standard of Behavior is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care using the nursing process in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice.
  • Performs plan of care interventions, including medication administration, specimen collection, and clinical treatments.
  • Documents patient care given and monitors, records, and communicates patient condition to the care team, physician, patient, and family.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
  • Collaborates across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral, and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
  • Evaluates learning needs of patients and/or families and provides appropriate education.
  • Acts as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of patients.
  • May perform duties of CNA, MA, or LPN as needed.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service, projects, and committees as assigned.
  • Adheres to and supports policies and procedures of STRHS.
  • Works scheduled shifts including overtime when necessary and accepts call schedule as directed.
  • Maintains a neat and professional appearance in compliance with the dress code.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree required; BSN preferred.
  • Current and active Registered Nurse Licensure for the State of Tennessee.
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire.
  • AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification within 6 months of hire.
  • AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within 6 months of hire.
  • TNCC certification preferred.
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in an emergency department setting.
  • Knowledge of electronic health records (EHR) systems.
