About the position
The ProBAR Law Student Fellow position is a full-time role focused on providing legal assistance and support to adult migrants in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities in South Texas. The fellow will work under the American Bar Association (ABA) to empower immigrants through high-quality legal information and representation, contributing to the organization's mission of ensuring access to justice and advancing the rule of law. This fellowship typically lasts for two calendar months and involves direct interaction with clients, legal research, and participation in Immigration Court proceedings.
Responsibilities
- Assist attorneys and paralegals in providing legal information and assistance to adult migrants in ICE facilities.
- Conduct intakes and provide pro se assistance to adults in detention, individually or in workshops.
- Participate in providing direct representation to individuals appearing before Immigration Court.
- Complete memoranda, briefs, or other legal documents.
- Work on immigration cases impacting the local community.
- Conduct legal research and writing on immigration policy and law.
- Meet with clients and observe Immigration Court proceedings.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements
- Possession of, or actively pursuing, a Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Spanish proficiency is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated interest in nonprofit or social justice work.
