About the position
The ProBAR Legal Fellow position is a full-time role focused on providing legal assistance and representation to adult migrants in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities in South Texas. The fellow will work under the American Bar Association, contributing to a grant-funded project aimed at empowering immigrants through high-quality legal information and support. This role involves conducting intakes, assisting with legal documentation, and participating in Immigration Court proceedings, with a strong emphasis on immigration law and policy.
Responsibilities
- Assist attorneys and paralegals in providing legal information and assistance to adult migrants in ICE facilities.
- Conduct intakes and provide pro se assistance to adults in detention, individually or in workshops.
- Participate in providing direct representation to individuals appearing before Immigration Court.
- Complete memoranda, briefs, or other legal documents as required.
- Work on immigration cases impacting the local community.
- Conduct legal research and writing on various legal topics, focusing on immigration policy and law.
- Meet with clients and observe Immigration Court proceedings.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements
- Possession of, or actively pursuing, a Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Spanish proficiency is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated interest in nonprofit or social justice work.
- Experience working with immigrants or detained individuals is a plus.
