About the position

The ProBAR Legal Fellow position at the American Bar Association focuses on providing legal support and representation to unaccompanied children in federal custody, particularly those from Central America. The role involves conducting legal research, writing, and direct representation in immigration cases, while also supporting attorneys in their work. This fellowship is grant-funded and typically lasts for a duration of two months.

Responsibilities

  • Support attorneys and work on cases involving direct representation of unaccompanied children detained in ORR shelters.
  • Conduct legal research and writing on immigration policy and law.
  • Analyze laws, regulations, and court rules, synthesizing findings into reports and memoranda.
  • Meet with clients and observe Immigration Court proceedings.
  • Appear as a law student before the Harlingen Immigration Court.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Possession of, or actively pursuing, a Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is required.
  • Ability to travel to care provider facilities funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement.
  • Background checks will be required for this position.
