About the position

The Remote Staff Attorney at ProBAR will provide remote legal assessments and services to detained unaccompanied children in immigration removal proceedings. This role involves reviewing legal screenings, facilitating communication between various teams, and preparing legal documents. The attorney will also mentor pro bono attorneys and volunteers, ensuring high-quality legal representation for vulnerable populations.

Responsibilities

  • Review legal screenings conducted by non-attorney staff and assign follow-up services.
  • Assess legal screenings to determine eligibility for immigration relief.
  • Facilitate communication between the shelter, shelter services team, and legal department.
  • Conduct quality control of completed applications for immigration relief.
  • Design and deliver training on immigration law topics for staff and volunteers.
  • Mentor pro bono attorneys and volunteers.
  • Review and analyze cases for possible pro bono representation.
  • Prepare legal filings and documents as assigned.
  • Draft legal briefs and review supporting documentation for immigration relief.
  • Provide legal assistance to detained or locally released children.
  • Observe ethical practices relating to client confidentiality.
  • Develop and maintain legal competency in immigration detention work.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Juris Doctorate or Master of Law (LLM) from an ABA-accredited law school and be in good standing.
  • Licensed to practice law in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish in written and spoken forms.
  • Intermediate proficiency with online research and Microsoft Office products.
  • Familiar with conducting virtual meetings and training on software such as Zoom and Teams.
  • Ability to pick up on client verbal and non-verbal cues.
  • Reliable internet and phone connection.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for training and meetings.

Nice-to-haves

  • One year of experience working in humanitarian immigration.
  • Prior work experience with children, particularly from Central America.
  • Prior volunteer or community experience regarding immigration or detention.
  • Prior non-profit experience involving assistance for underserved populations.
