About the position

The Pro Bono and Summer Programs Officer at Columbia University will support the Law School's Pro Bono Program and assist in preparing students for summer internships in the public sector. This role involves managing compliance with pro bono graduation requirements, coordinating summer programs, and facilitating training workshops for students. The officer will work closely with the Assistant Director of Pro Bono and Summer Programs and other stakeholders to enhance public service professional development for law students.

Responsibilities

  • Track individual JD student compliance with Columbia’s mandatory pro bono graduation requirements.
  • Assist Columbia Law School’s student groups with organizing student-directed pro bono projects.
  • Advise students of existing pro bono opportunities and answer student questions regarding pro bono requirements.
  • Help lead the planning and execution of the annual Honors dinner for students dedicated to public interest and pro bono activities.
  • Coordinate the HRIP training and orientation programs in collaboration with the Director for Human Rights and Public International Law.
  • Update the HRIP training and orientation manual and related materials.
  • Assist with HRIP Information Sessions and Debriefing Sessions, including preparation of presentations and logistical arrangements.
  • Coordinate the implementation of mandatory training workshops for 1Ls on resumes and cover letters.
  • Help coordinate informational sessions about the PILC Fair and provide support for the event.
  • Assist with running the Mock Interview Program for students.
  • Update and distribute printed and web materials about SJI's summer funding programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or its equivalent required.
  • Minimum 0-2 years related experience, preferably as a program coordinator, administrative assistant, or office manager.
  • Outstanding data management, administrative, organizational, secretarial and interpersonal skills required.
  • Excellent computer skills including word processing, Internet, desktop publishing, Excel and database management required.
  • Excellent English oral and written communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated interest and participation in public interest issues and activities is desirable.

  • Good judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Availability for some evening and weekend work.
