About the position

The Probate Court Investigator conducts investigations related to guardianship cases, ensuring compliance with legal standards and local regulations. This role involves reviewing applications, assessing living conditions, and coordinating with various agencies. The investigator also assists in training interns and represents the department in various public forums.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct court investigations of privately filed and community-initiated guardianships.
  • Review guardianship applications and documents annually to ensure compliance with laws and local rules.
  • Coordinate activities with the Department of Protective and Regulatory Services and other involved agencies.
  • Investigate circumstances alleged in guardianship applications and assess the proposed ward's living environment.
  • Obtain medical evidence for cases with substantial evidence of incapacity.
  • Generate and file reports regarding investigation findings.
  • Coordinate with Probate Attorney to gather information and identify witnesses for community initiated guardianship cases.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of department procedures.
  • Represent the department at meetings, conferences, and public events as requested.
  • Testify at hearings, trials, and legislative meetings as requested.
  • Participate in training workshops and perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Social Work from an accredited college or university.
  • Independently licensed as a LMSW or LCSW in Texas.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Texas Driver's License with a good driving record and valid insurance.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and various medical, mental, and physical incapacities.
  • Ability to work under time constraints and in emergency situations.
  • Professional demeanor and appearance.
  • Ability to conduct home visits for evaluations and capacity determinations.
  • Effective people skills in difficult situations.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and mental/medical diagnosis.
  • Ability to make decisions based on statutes and relevant information.
  • Knowledge of Texas Probate Code and related codes.
  • Familiarity with investigative techniques and research skills.
  • Ability to manage programs and develop administrative policies.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and general data entry.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of electronic communication systems for online supervision.
  • Experience in case management and forensic report preparation.
